Etsy setup

Declaring a production partner on Etsy.

If someone else manufactures your design, Etsy requires you to say so. The form is short, the wording is ambiguous, and getting it wrong is a policy problem rather than a cosmetic one.

Why this form exists

Etsy's handmade policy does not require you to make everything with your own hands. It requires you to be the designer, and to disclose anyone who helps you make it. A production partner is any outside business that manufactures your physical product from your design — a laser cutting workshop qualifies.

Declaring one is not an admission of anything. It is the normal, expected setup for a design-led shop, and it is what allows you to sell a product you could not physically make at home.

Where to find it

Shop Manager, then Settings, then Production partners, then Add a new production partner. Once created, the partner has to be attached to each listing it applies to — creating it is not enough on its own.

The form, field by field

Production partner name
The business that makes your product. This field is private to Etsy — buyers never see it.
Show this to buyers
Off. Buyers see the descriptive title instead, which is the point of the next field.
Descriptive title
What buyers see in place of the name. Something plain and accurate, along the lines of a metal wall art production partner.
Location
Where production actually happens — the workshop's city and country, not yours.
Why do you work with this partner?
For a cut-metal product the honest answer is that you do not have the equipment or technical ability to make it entirely yourself. Etsy offers this as one of the fixed options.
What is your role in the design process?
If the artwork is yours, you designed everything yourself. Say so.
What is your partner's role in production?
For this service, the partner does all the manufacturing.
What they do for you
A short free-text description of how the partner helps you make your items — the cutting, coating and finishing side, with the design credited to you.

Approved designers get the exact values and a ready-to-paste description for WallArtPeople inside the portal, so nothing has to be guessed.

Getting the listings right too

  • Attach the partner to every listing it manufactures — including new listings you add later.
  • The Ships from location has to reflect where the parcel actually departs from, which for a drop-shipped product is the workshop, not your home address.
  • Use it only for your own designs and buyer-personalised work. A production partner declaration does not make reselling someone else's design compliant.
  • Set a Made to order processing profile that reflects real production time, and add transit time on top of it.
  • Build the shipping profile from a realistic mid-size parcel, because Etsy cannot vary the shipping profile by size variation within one listing.

How this fits with blind shipping

These two things do not conflict, and sellers often assume they do. Etsy needs an accurate declaration in your shop settings; your buyer receives a parcel with no manufacturer branding on it. Disclosure happens in your shop admin, not on the box.

In our case the parcel carries no brand name at all — not the workshop's, not your shop's — and ships DDP so the buyer is not charged duties on delivery. The full detail is on the blind shipping page.

Frequently asked

Will buyers see who manufactures my product?+

They see the descriptive title you set, not the partner's name. The name field is private to Etsy.

Does declaring a partner hurt my shop?+

No. It is the standard setup for design-led shops selling manufactured goods. What creates risk is not declaring, or declaring details that do not match how the product is really made and shipped.

Do I need a separate partner entry for each product type?+

One entry per manufacturing business is enough. Attach that entry to every listing it applies to. If you use several manufacturers, create one entry each.

Can I declare a production partner and still call my shop handmade?+

Etsy's rules turn on you being the designer and disclosing your production help, not on doing every physical step yourself. Read Etsy's own handmade policy for the authoritative wording — it is their call, not ours.
